How are Whole and Hole Different?

A hole may be a cove or small bay in the US.

There are almost opposite meanings to ‘hole’ and ‘whole’. The little nubbins of fried dough are called ‘doughnut holes’, but they are not a hole. ‘whole’ means things like whole, complete, and healthy, and is used in expressions such as ‘the whole thing,’ ‘whole milk,’ and ‘whole wheat.’

The word hole refers to a hole in turf. Before the construction of a building, an excavation is an extended hole made by digging out or removing material.
