The original AF system works well and allows for smaller and lighter lens sizes, but in 1998 Nikon introduced a new mode called the AF-S. The focus motor for the AF-S lenses is built into them. They call it ‘silent wave”, because they use Ultrasonic motors. This type of motor is named after the makers of third party AF-S compatible lenses. Each company has a different name for what is called virtual reality, which is a method of counteracting camera movement by moving a lens element in real time.

The lens can automatically focus through the camera if it’s referred to as an ‘F” The auto focus with distance information is called the AF-D. The distance between the subject and the lens can be reported to the camera by it. It is possible to use the distance information for metering.
